Our junior high students have developed the social and emotional capacities to thrive in our public charter school environment where they enjoy increasing freedoms and responsibilities. We build a climate where our students’ desire for autonomy, competence, relationships and fun are met; where students feel connected, heard, empowered and safe; and where they are encouraged to begin developing independence of action and character.
The central focus of Ascend’s middle school culture is the development of agency — students’ knowledge that they are in control of their own lives and can act in alignment in reaching their hopes and dreams.
By the time Ascend students enter middle school, they have acquired academic skills, critical capacities, mental stamina and engagement in schooling to participate in an ambitious course of study.
Humanities in middle school builds upon the lower school literacy program. Its primary goals are cultural literacy, critical-thinking, writing and close-reading, all of which aim to expand students' understanding of the world and their place in it. Students engage with texts that explore life beyond middle school in our Brooklyn borough, while also delving into literature that mirrors their known New York culture and community.

Our science program combines experiments, project-based learning, and engaging texts. Students develop as lifelong scientific thinkers as they work to “figure out” versus “learn about” relevant and meaningful real-world concepts. Through this process, students are empowered as the knowers and doers of science equipped with skills that mirror those of professional scientists and engineers.
Students explore big ideas in life science, earth science and physical science. In addition, students in grade 8 can earn high school Regents credit through the Living Environment course. For this credit, students complete at least 1,200 minutes of hands-on lab experiences.
