Katie Capella serves as the principal of Central Brooklyn Ascend Lower School, after joining Ascend in July 2020 as a principal in residence at Central Brooklyn’s middle school. Capella brings to Ascend many years of teaching and school leadership experience. Her education career began at Achievement First East New York Elementary, where she served for nine years teaching kindergarten, second, and third grade, and then as an academic dean and dean of special services. Capella then supported the Achievement First network as an elementary science curriculum specialist and as a director leading talent development, before returning to be a founding middle school academic dean. Most recently, Capella was a fellow with Building Excellent Schools and a school director at Brooklyn Laboratory Charter School. Capella has a bachelor’s in history from Harvard University and a master’s of science in teaching from Pace University.
