Brooklyn Ascend High School Welcomes Buju Banton for Principal for the Day

Ascend Public Charter Schools

June 30, 2026

On May 4, Brooklyn Ascend High School welcomed a special guest to campus as part of the Principal for the Day program: internationally acclaimed reggae artist Buju Banton.

Principal for the Day connects students with accomplished leaders, artists, entrepreneurs, and changemakers, giving young people the opportunity to learn directly from individuals who have achieved success in their fields. Through conversation, mentorship, and shared experiences, students gain valuable insight into leadership, perseverance, and the many paths available to them after high school.

For BAHS students, Buju Banton's visit offered a unique opportunity to hear from one of the most influential voices in reggae music. Over the course of his decades-long career, Banton has earned international recognition for his music, storytelling, and cultural impact, inspiring audiences around the world through themes of resilience, identity, and personal growth.

Throughout the day, Banton stepped fully into his role as Principal for the Day. After meeting with school leaders and staff, he joined the school's morning announcements before touring the building and visiting classrooms, where students had the opportunity to interact with him directly, ask questions, and hear firsthand about his journey. He also participated in a small-group session with selected students, sharing lessons about discipline, growth, staying grounded, and pursuing one's goals with purpose. The visit concluded with a group photo and celebration of the school community.

The day centered on themes of identity, resilience, and legacy, encouraging students to reflect on their own aspirations and the impact they hope to make in their communities. For many students, hearing from someone whose story resonates with the diverse backgrounds represented at BAHS made the experience especially meaningful.

Experiences like Principal for the Day reflect Ascend's commitment to exposing students to a wide range of perspectives and possibilities. By bringing accomplished professionals into our schools, students can see firsthand how talent, hard work, and determination can open doors and create opportunities.

At Brooklyn Ascend High School, preparing students for lives of boundless choice means helping them envision what is possible. Visits from leaders like Buju Banton help make those possibilities feel real.

We are grateful to Buju Banton and the Principal for the Day team for creating such a memorable experience for our students. His visit was an inspiring reminder that leadership can take many forms and that our students' stories, identities, and ambitions matter.
